The Messy Millennial Middle

Why Progress Over Perfection Changed My Life

For years, I genuinely believed that if I just tried a little harder, planned a little better, or became a little more organised, life would finally feel easier.

If I could just become the perfect mum.
Run the perfect business.
Keep the perfect house.
Cook healthier dinners.
Exercise consistently.
Remember every permission slip.
Reply to every message.

Then I’d finally feel like I had it together.

The problem?

There was always another standard to reach.

And I don’t think I’m the only millennial woman who feels like that.

We grew up believing that if we worked hard enough, we’d eventually arrive at a place where life felt “sorted.”

But somewhere along the way, the finish line kept moving.

Perfection is exhausting.

Perfection tells us that every area of life deserves 100%.

Motherhood.
Marriage.
Career.
Health.
Friendships.
Finances.
Our homes.

The reality is…

Life doesn’t work like that.

Some seasons need more from us than others.

Sometimes surviving the week is enough.

Sometimes showing up imperfectly is the win.

Progress gives you permission to keep moving

One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve ever made was realising that consistency beats perfection almost every time.

Writing one blog post is better than waiting until I can write the perfect fifty.

Going for a twenty-minute walk is better than skipping exercise because I don’t have an hour.

Saving fifty dollars is better than waiting until I can save five hundred.

Progress compounds.

Perfection usually procrastinates.

I’m building this blog because of that lesson.

A few years ago, I probably wouldn’t have published half the things I’m writing now.

I’d have overthought every sentence.

Wondered what people would think.

Delayed posting until it felt “ready.”

These days I’m trying something different.

I’m documenting the journey while I’m living it.

Not because I have all the answers.

But because maybe none of us need another perfectly polished version of life.

Maybe we just need more honest conversations from people willing to admit they’re still figuring it out too.

What progress looks like now

These days, progress looks different for me.

It looks like publishing the blog instead of endlessly editing it.

Having the conversation instead of worrying whether I’ll say it perfectly.

Building a business that fits around my family instead of trying to prove something to the internet.

Choosing consistency over intensity.

And reminding myself that a life built slowly is still a life worth building.

Final thoughts

If there’s one lesson I hope my kids learn from watching me, it’s this:

You don’t have to do everything perfectly to build a beautiful life.

You just have to keep showing up.

One conversation.

One decision.

One small step at a time.

Because progress doesn’t just change your results.

Sometimes it changes the way you experience your whole life.
